I have embarked on a project to play old (mostly) JRPGs in chronological order! I'm cheating a little because I am often playing remakes/ports but pretending they're still from the date of the game's original release, and this is typically because I would rather save time with the modern-ish conveniences. I compiled my list by merging a bunch of “top N RPGs for C console” and will add in sequels to existing games as I go along. Consoles covered are (Nintendo) NES, SNES, GB(A), Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, DS, (Sony) PS1, PS2, PSP, (Sega) Mega Drive, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast. Sorry, WonderSwan. I am quite directionally challenged, so I almost always look up maps of areas before beginning a game that doesn't automap. I am trying to hand-map more; for example, I managed to composite enough screenshots of the world map in Tengai Makyou Ziria to assemble a map of the first three provinces or so. I am also not above using cheat codes if I'm tired of grinding.

My next game is Rise of the Dragon (playing on Sega CD).
